  1. 1/2 c White sugar

  2. 1/3 c Shortening

  3. 1 Egg

  4. 1/2 c Molasses

  5. 1 c Water

  6. 2 c Flour

  7. 1 t Ginger

  8. 1/2 t Salt

  9. 1/2 t Baking soda

  10. 1/2 t Nutmeg

  11. 1/2 t Ground cloves

  12. 1/2 t Cinnamon

  13. 1/4 c Oleo

  14. 2 c Powdered sugar

  15. 1 T Milk

  16. 1 t Vanilla

Instructions Jump to Ingredients ↑

  1. Mix sugar, shortening eggs, water and molasses.

  2. Stir in remaining ingredients (except frosting) and cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour.

  3. Drop dough by teaspoonfuls about 2" apart onto ungreased cookie sheet.

  4. Bake at 400 for 8 minutes or until no indent remains when touched.

  5. Immediately remove from cookie sheet and cool.

  6. Frosting: mix 1/4 c.

  7. oleo (softened) with 2 c.

  8. x sugar.

  9. Beat in 1 T milk and 1 t vanilla until smooth and of spreading consistency.
