  3. Ingredients for onion upma to make 2-3 servings.

  4. Rava - 1 cup

  5. water - 2 cups

  6. Onion - 1 large

  7. green chillis - 2 or more according to taste.

  8. curry leaves - 7-8

  9. oil - 3 tbsp

  10. Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon

  11. chana dal - 1 tsp

  12. urad dal - 1 tsp

  13. salt - 1 1/2 tsp or to taste

  14. sugar - 1/2 tsp

  15. Fresh grated coconut - 2 tbsp

  16. coriander leaves - 1 small bunch

  1. Heat oil in a deep pan.

  2. Add mustard seeds. When they crackle, add chana dal, urad dal.

  3. fry till dal is light brown. Add chilli pieces. Fry for 1 minute.

  4. Add chopped onion. Fry till onion is transperant.

  5. Add water. Bring to boil. Add salt, sugar.

  6. Reduce flame. Add roasted rava. Mix well so as not to let form lumps.

  7. Cover and cook for 5 minutes on low flame.

  8. Add grated coconut, chopped coriander leaves. Mix well.

  9. You may roast rava in large quantities when you have time and keep it for making upma when you are in hurry. Saves time.

  10. Roasting rava or semolina properly while stiring on low or medium flame is important. If rava is not roasted well, the uppuma will be sticky when ready. If rava is roasted too much and allowed to be browned, the color of uppittu will be dark. So be careful while roasting rava.

  11. You can also add 1 cup chopped, mixed vegetables - green peas, beans , carrots, potato, cabbage, cauliflower, capsicum etc. Chop them fine and add them after the onions are fried. Or you may omit onions if you wish.
