  1. 2 1/2 C sugar

  2. 1 1/4 C water

  3. 4 dozen whole clove s

  4. 6 sticks cinnamon

  5. 3 crushed nutmeg s peel of

  6. 3 lemon s peel of

  7. 2 orange s

  8. 4 C hot lemon or lime juice (or combination)

  9. 4 bottles red wine or Madeira, port, or sherry slices of lemon and pineapple

  1. Make a syrup by boiling the sugar, water, spices, and peel for 5 minutes. Strain. Add hot juice to syrup. Heat well, but do not boil, and add the wine. Serve very hot with the fruit slices.
