  1. 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter/margarine

  2. 3 eggs, separated

  3. 3 c. reg. flour, sifted

  4. 1 tsp. almond extract

  5. 1/2 c. finely grated orange peel

  6. (opt.)

  7. 1 c. sugar

  8. 2 tsp. baking powder

  9. 1 tsp. vanilla

  10. 1 c. sliced almonds

  11. 1/2 c. canola oil

  12. Cream butter and add sugar gradually. Using electric beater at

  13. low speed, add unbeaten whites of eggs, then yolks, one at a time,

  14. until thoroughly blended. Add vanilla and almond extracts to

  15. mixture. Sift together flour and baking powder and add gradually to

  16. the mixture; finally, stir in almonds and orange peel. Refrigerate

  17. 3 or 4 hours or overnight. Cut mixture into 4 parts. Dipping

  18. fingers in canola oil, roll mixture into four "sausages" or loaves

  19. 1 1/2 inch diameter

  20. 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until light golden around edges.

  21. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly on rack. While loaves

  22. are still quite hot, slice on diagonal. Then lay each slice on its

  23. side on the cookie tin and return to oven until golden (probably

  24. 5 to 7 minutes
