Saucy Apple Cake -

1/4 c shortening

1 egg; slightly beaten

1 c flour

1 ts baking soda

1/2 ts cinnamon

1/4 ts salt

2 c tart apples; shredded,

-peeled 1/4 c walnuts; chopped

**sauce** 1 c sugar

2 tb cornstarch

1/2 c light cream

1/2 c butter or margarine

1 1/2 ts vanilla extract

8 inch square baking pan. Bake at

350 for 35 to 40 minutes or until cake tests done. For sauce, combine sugar, cornstarch and cream in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat; boil for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat. Add butter and vanilla; stir until butter is melted. Serve warm with cake. Source: Taste of Home Magazine.
