  5. 1/2 c Butter or margarine

  6. 1 c Light brown sugar*

  7. 2 Eggs

  8. 1 ts Vanilla

  9. 1/2 ts Lemon extract

  10. 1/2 ts Anise extract

  11. 2 3/4 c Sifted flour

  12. 1 ts Baking powder

  13. 1/2 ts Salt

  14. 1/2 ts Black pepper

  15. 1/4 ts Nutmeg

  16. 1/4 ts Cloves

  17. 1/8 ts Mace

  18. Confectioners sugar

  19. firmly packed

  20. Just the smell of these cookies baking is enough to

  21. get you in the holiday spirit.

  22. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter with brown

  23. sugar. Beat eggs and extracts. In another bowl, add

  24. sifted flour and mix baking powder, salt, pepper and spices. Gradually add flour butter mixture, mixing

  25. well after each addition. Chill 2 hours or overnight.

  26. Preheat oven to 375ø. Shape dough with two teaspoons

  27. into ovals and place on ungreased baking sheets. Bake

  28. 8-10 minutes. Carefully remove cookies from baking

  29. sheets to wire racks and sprinkle with confectioners

  30. sugar. Cool and store in airtight containers. These

  31. cookies keep well and mellow with age. They're their

  32. best about 5-8 days after baking.
