  1. 3-1/2 pounds boneless chuck roast

  2. 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening

  3. 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup

  4. 1 can condensed cream of onion soup

  5. 1/2 cup water

  6. 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

  7. 2 tablespoons prepared white horseradish

  8. 6 medium potatoes peeled and cut in half

  9. 2 cups carrots peeled and cut diagonally in

  10. 2" pieces

  1. Cut meat across grain into 8 slices.

  2. In large heavy pan brown meat in shortening over medium-high heat then pour off fat.

  3. Stir in soups, water, pepper and horseradish.

  4. Heat to boiling then cover and cook over low heat for 45 minutes.

  5. Add potatoes and carrots.

  6. Stirring often cook for 45 minutes more.
