  1. 1 loaf stale French bread

  2. 1 qt. milk

  3. 3 eggs

  4. 1 1/2 c. sugar

  5. 2 tbsp. vanilla

  6. 3 tbsp. sweet butter, softened

  7. 1 c. raisins

  1. Crumble bread into bowl. Pour milk over and let stand 1 hour. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease 9 x 13 x 2 inch pan with softened butter – grease pan heavily. In another bowl beat 3 eggs, sugar and vanilla. Stir this into bread – add raisins. Pour into prepared baking dish, place on middle rack of oven and bake until browned and set, about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Cool to room temperature.

  2. WHISKEY SAUCE FOR BREAD PUDDING:

  3. tbsp. butter 1 c. confectioners sugar 1 egg 4 tbsp. whiskey Stir butter and sugar together in top of double boiler over simmering water until sugar is dissolved and mixture is very hot. Remove from heat. Beat egg well and whisk into the sugar mixture. Remove pan from base and continue beating until sauce has cooled to room temperature. Add whiskey to taste.

  4. To serve, preheat broiler. Cut pudding into squares and transfer each square to heat – proof serving dish. Spoon whiskey sauce over pudding and run under broiler until bubbling, 8 to 10 portions.
