  6. 1/2 cup shortening

  7. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  8. 1 1/2 cups sugar

  9. 3 cups flour

  10. 1 egg -- well beaten

  11. 3 teaspoons baking powder

  12. 1/2 cup milk

  13. 1 teaspoon vanilla

  14. 1 cup figs -- finely chopped

  15. I got this one from my grandmother many years ago. She used this

  16. and it always turned out super. Cream shortening and 1 cup sugar. Add egg

  17. and beat until light and fluffy. Mix milk and vanilla.

  18. Sift salt, flour and baking powder together. Add alternately with milk to

  19. creamed mixture. Blend all well. Roll out to 1/8 inch thickness on lightly

  20. floured board. (Rectangle shape) Put figs in saucepan with remaining sugar and 1 cup boiling water. Boil

  21. 5 minutes. Cool. Spread cooked mixture over half the

  22. dough. Cover with the other half of the dough. Cut into oblong bars. Bake in

  23. 400 oven for 12 - 15 minutes. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
