  1. 5 whole fresh Bartlett pears

  2. 3 cups water

  3. 1/2 cup distilled vinegar

  4. 3 teaspoons sugar

  5. 16 whole cloves

  6. Fresh ginger root -- cut into 4 small slices

  7. 3 sticks cinnamon

  1. Directions Peel, quarter, and core pears to measure about 5 cups.

  2. Combine remaining ingredients in a large kettle.

  3. Bring to a boil and simmer juices for 5 minutes.

  4. Then add pears and return to a boil.

  5. Simmer 15-20 minutes longer.

  6. Serve warm or refrigerate and serve chilled.

  7. Keeps well for several days.
