  2. 1 tablespoon(s) Sugar

  3. 2 1/4 cup(s) warm water

  4. 1/4 cup(s) brown sugar packed

  5. 1/4 cup(s) Shortening

  6. 1/4 cup(s) Molasses

  7. 1 teaspoon(s) Salt

  8. 1 cup(s) Rye Flour

  9. 3 1/2 cup(s) all-purpose flour

  10. 1 tablespoon(s) Caraway seeds

  1. In a large bowl disolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Stir in the brown sugar, shortening, molasses, caraway seeds and salt. Add Rye flour and 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour; beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.

  2. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.

  3. Punch down; shape into 3 loaves. Place on greased baking sheets. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.

  4. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans to wire rack to cool.
