  1. 1 apple

  2. 2 teaspoons whole cloves

  3. 1 orange, thinly sliced

  4. 2 quarts apple cider

  5. One-half cup light brown sugar

  6. 1 teaspoon allspice

  7. Pinch grated nutmeg

  8. 1 cup dark rum

  9. Cinnamon sticks, garnish

  1. Stud the apple with the cloves. In a medium pot, combine the studded apple and remaining ingredients. Slowly bring to a simmer over low heat. Simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and add the rum. Discard the apple. Ladle into mugs and garnish each with a cinnamon stick. Serve immediately.

  2. Makes 2 quarts, about 8 servings.
