  1. 1 cup sugar

  2. 4 tablespoons vegetable shortening

  3. 3 cups sour milk

  4. 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg

  5. 1 teaspoon lemon extract

  6. 1 teaspoon baking soda

  7. 1 teaspoon baking powder

  8. 1/2 teaspoon salt Flour Apple sauce

  1. Instructions Cream vegetable shortening, gradually add sugar, then add salt, nutmeg, lemon, soda, baking powder, sour milk and sufficient flour to make stiffish dough. Roll out on floured baking board, cut with large round cutter, and fry in hot vegetable shortening until well cooked and nicely browned on both sides. Drain and serve with hot apple sauce. Sufficient for 20 cakes.
