  1. 1/2 sticks butter

  2. 1 c. brown sugar

  3. 1 c. white sugar

  4. 2 large egg s (or 3 small)

  5. 1/2 sq. melted unsweetened chocolate

  6. 1 tsp vanilla

  7. 1/2 c. sifted cake flour

  8. 1/2 tsp. baking powder

  9. scant tsp. baking soda

  10. pinch of salt

  11. 1/2 c. sour cream

  12. 1 c strong coffee

  1. Sift flour with dry ingredients three times.

  2. Cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy.

  3. Beat in the eggs.

  4. Add chocolate and vanilla and mix well.

  5. Alternately add dry ingredients with the sour cream, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Do no overbeat.

  6. Finally add the hot coffee and mix. The batter will be runny. Immediately pour into a greased 9 X 13 pan and bake in a 350° oven for about 40 minutes or until the edges pull away from the sides and the middle is done. Can be made into layers and baked at 375° for 25-30 minutes.

  7. Cake is very rich and does not need icing, but can be frosted with a mocha frosting which brings out the coffee flavor.
