  1. 110ml black treacle

  2. 110ml golden syrup

  3. 110g butter

  4. 1 1/2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda

  5. 120ml milk

  6. 1 egg

  7. 250g plain flour

  8. 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger

  9. 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  10. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  11. 475ml boiling water

  12. 200g caster sugar

  13. 2 tablespoons cornflour

  14. 60g unsweetened cocoa powder

  15. 1 teaspoon salt

  16. 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  17. 2 tablespoons butter

  1. In a small saucepan, heat treacle, golden syrup and 110g butter until almost boiling. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Stir in bicarb, milk and egg.

  2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, ginger, cinnamon and salt. Make a well in the centre and pour in the treacle mixture. Mix until smooth.

  3. Spray preheated waffle iron with cooking spray. Pour mix onto hot waffle iron. Cook until golden brown. Serve hot with chocolate sauce.

  4. To make chocolate sauce: In a saucepan, combine water, 200g sugar, cornflour, cocoa powder and 1 teaspoon salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to the boil. Remove from heat and add vanilla and 2 tablespoons butter; stir until smooth.
