  1. 1 c. butter softened

  2. 1 1/3 c. plus

  3. 1/2 cup sugar divided

  4. 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract divided

  5. 2 c. flour

  6. 2-(8oz.) pkgs. cream cheese softened

  7. 2 eggs

  8. 1 tsp. cinnamon

  9. 8 c. peeled and thinly sliced apples

  10. 1/2 c. slivered almonds

  1. In small mixing bowl, combine butter, 2/3 cup of the sugar, and 1/2 tsp. of the vanilla. Beat with electric mixer until light and creamy, about 5 minutes. Blend in flour. Pat dough into bottom and 1" up sides of ungreased 9"x13" pan. Set aside. In large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and 1/2 cup of the sugar. Mix till well blended. Beat in eggs and remaining 1 tsp. vanilla. Pour into pastry-lined pan. Set aside. In large bowl, combine remaining 2/3 cup sugar and cinnamon. Add apples and toss gently to coat. Arrange apples over cream cheese layer; sprinkle with almonds. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 400 degrees and bake 25 minutes longer. Cool completely. Cut into bars. Store in refrigerator. Yield: serves 24
