Glazed Applesauce Cookies

Combine the flour, soda, spices, and salt; set aside.

Beat together the brown sugar and shortening until smooth; beat in the applesauce, egg, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Stir in the flour and spice mixture until well blended. Fold in the raisins.

Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Heat oven to 400.

Drop the dough by rounded teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for about 8 to 10 minutes, or until firm. Immediately remove the cookies to racks and let cool. Glaze cooled cookies with the vanilla glaze (below).

In a small saucepan, heat the butter over medium heat until lightly browned. Don't let the butter burn or get too dark. Remove from the heat and stir in the confectioners' sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Stir in enough milk to make a smooth glaze for the cookies.

Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
