  1. 2 cups split pea flour

  2. 1 cup self-rising flour

  3. 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

  4. 1/2 teaspoon turmeric

  5. 1/2 teaspoon cumin

  6. 1-1/2 teaspoon salt

  7. 3/4 cup water , or as needed

  8. 1/2 small onion , minced

  9. 2 garlic cloves , minced

  10. 1 spring onion , finely chopped (green part only)

  11. 2 cups vegetable oil for frying

  1. Sift the split pea flour, self-rising flour, and baking powder into a large bowl.

  2. Stir in turmeric, cumin, and salt.

  3. Gradually stir in enough water to make a very thick batter.

  4. Stir in minced onion, garlic, and chopped green onion.

  5. Heat oil in a large heavy skillet or saucepan over medium-high heat.

  6. When the oil is very hot, drop tablespoonfuls of the batter into the pan, and fry until golden brown on both sides.

  7. Remove onto paper towels and drain.

  8. Delicious served with mango chutney and yogurt.
