  1. For the cupcakes:

  2. 140g (5oz) butter

  3. 225g (8oz) caster sugar

  4. 225g (8oz) plain flour

  5. 1 teaspoon baking powder

  6. 1 egg

  7. 1 teaspoon cocoa powder

  8. 100ml milk

  9. 2 drops orange flavouring

  10. For the icing:

  11. 170g (6oz) icing sugar

  12. 85g (3oz) butter

  13. 1/2 cocoa powder

  14. 1 drop orange flavouring

  15. 1 tablespoon milk, or as needed

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4.

  2. Put the 140g butter and caster sugar in a bowl and cream together well.

  3. Add in the remaining cupcake ingredients and mix well until mixture is light and smooth. Place 2 heaped teaspoons in paper cup cake holders.

  4. Bake in the preheated oven for around 12 minutes until a skewer inserted near the centre comes out clean. Cool completely.

  5. For buttercream icing put icing sugar, the 85g butter, 1/2 teaspoon cocoa powder and flavouring in a bowl and add in milk and mix well. Mixture should be quite thick so as not to run off the cake.
