  1. Puttu- 2cups crushed

  23. 12.Garam Masala-a pinch

  24. 13 salt

  25. 14 Oil

  26. For seasoning

  27. 1.Oil

  28. 2.Mustard seeds

  1. Wash the soya chunks thoroughly and boil them by adding enough water and salt till they become soft.Remove from stove and drain water; squeeze out all the water from the chunks .

  2. Heat oil in a pan and splutter whole masala .Add sliced onion and saute till they turn brown.Then add ginger,garlic and green chilli and saute till the raw smell goes.

  3. Add chopped tomatoes and stir till they are soft.Add the powders ( in low flame )

  4. and stir well.Then add the tomato sauce ,mix well.

  5. Add boiled soya chunks and mix well.Sprinkle enough salt Mix again,add little water (max .1/4 cup ) cover and cook in low flame for about 15 mints.Don't add more water ; the masala should be dry.

  6. Preparing Upma 5 Heat oil in another pan ,splutter mustard seeds and add sliced small onions ,dry red chilli,curry leaves and saute till the onions turn golden brown.

  7. Then add the crushed puttu and stir well.

  8. Add the soya masala,mix well ,cover and cook in the lowest flame for 3-5 mints.

  9. Remove from fire and serve hot.

  10. Notes- I used wheat flour for making puttu .You can use rice also 8 How to make puttu:

  11. Ingredients Rice flour/wheat flour : 2cups Grated Coconut – 3/4 to 1 cup Water – 1/2 – 3/4 cup Salt 10 In a large bowl, take the flour and sprinkle water on the flour (Be careful in mixing water. The perfect combination of water and rice powder gives the good result).

  12. Add salt to taste and mix it thoroughly with hand. (It should be of bread crumb consistency and not in the form of dough.)

  13. Add water in the lower vessel of puttu maker and let it boil.Place the upper vessel or puttu kutti above the lower vessel when the water is boiling .When steam starts to come out of the puttukutti,remove it from the lower vessel and add coconut and flour alternately .( 1 tblspn of coconut followed by 6 tblspn of flour )The upper and lower layer should be coconut.Close the puttu kuttu and place it on the steamer(lower vessel) Steam for 10 mints.
