  1. 1 cup butter (no substitutes), softened

  2. 2 cups sugar

  3. 2 eggs

  4. 3 teaspoons vanilla extract

  5. 3 cups all-purpose flour

  6. 1 cup baking cocoa

  7. 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  8. 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  9. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  10. 48 pieces candy corn

  11. 24 red-hot candies

  1. In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar.

  2. Beat in eggs and vanilla.

  3. Combine the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture.

  4. Roll dough into 1/2-in. balls. Place on lightly greased baking sheets.

  5. Flatten with a glass dipped in sugar.

  6. Pinch top of cookie to form ears.

  7. For whiskers, press a fork twice into each cookie.

  8. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10-12 minutes or until cookies are set.

  9. Remove from the oven; immediately press on candy corn for eyes and red-hots for noses.

  10. Remove to wire racks to cool.
