  1. 2 cups sugar

  2. 1/2 cup cocoa

  3. 1 stick butter

  4. 1/2 cup milk

  5. 3 cups oatmeal

  6. 1 cup nuts (optional, I never use)

  7. 1 tsp vanilla

  1. Put all ingredients except oatmeal and vanilla (and nuts if you are using) in a heavy 3 quart or larger saucepan.

  2. Cook over medium high heat, stirring so it will not stick, until a small amount dropped in cold water forms a soft ball.

  3. Turn off heat.

  4. Stir in oatmeal and vanilla and nuts if using.

  5. Drop by spoonfuls onto waxed paper or a greased cookie sheet.

  6. You're supposed to let them cool completely but we always starting eating them as soon as we could handle them!
