  13. 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature

  14. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  15. For the filling:

  16. 1 cup sugar

  17. 3 large egg yolks

  18. 3 ounces butter, cut into small pieces

  19. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  20. 1 cup pecans, toasted and finely chopped

  21. 1 1/3 cups unsweetened coconut, toasted

  22. For the syrup:

  23. 1 cup water

  24. 3/4 cup sugar

  25. 2 tablespoons dark rum

  26. For the chocolate icing:

  27. 8 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped

  28. 2 tablespoons light corn syrup

  29. 1 1/2 ounces unsalted butter

  30. 1 cup heavy cream
