  5. 4 teaspoons baking powder

  7. 1/4 cup vegetable shortening, melted

  8. 1 large egg

  1. In a large mixing bowl, sift together cornmeal, flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Add milk, melted shortening, and egg. Beat until smooth, about 1 minute.

  2. Pour into a well-greased 8-inch baking pan.

  3. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 20 to 25 minutes.
