  1. 2 Tbsp. butter

  2. 5 apples

  3. 1/2 C. butter

  4. 1 egg, beaten

  5. 2 1/2 C. flour

  6. 1 tsp. cinnamon

  7. 1/2 tsp. cloves

  8. 1 C. water, hot

  9. 3/4 C. brown sugar

  10. 1/2 C. nuts, chopped

  11. 1/2 C. sugar

  12. 1 C. light molasses

  13. 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda

  14. 1 tsp. ginger

  15. 1 tsp. salt

  1. Coat 8x12x2-inch pan with 2 Tbls. butter. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over butter. Peel, core, and slice apples. Arrange the apples slices over sugar mixture. Sprinkle nuts over all. Place pan on bottom shelf of oven; let apples cook while mixing other ingredients Cream together butter and sugar, add egg and molasses; mix well. Sift dry ingredients; stir in to creamed mixture. Put in hot water and mix to thin batter. Remove pan from oven; pour batter over apples. Return to oven; bake 35 minutes. Remove from oven; loosen cake around edges. Let stand 5 minutes and turn out on to serving tray.
